How to Decide Whether You Need a Security Guard, or Security For Your EventJuly 28, 2017
In light of the terrorist attacks which occurred in the first half of 2017, security is a priority for many people like never before. It’s incredibly unfortunate, but it is also better to be safe than sorry. There are, however, a lot of questions you need to ask yourself when hiring security for an event.
This article will hopefully help you to answer any of the questions you might have about security for your event, and whether or not you need it in the first place. So, read on to find out more about event security.
Why do you need security for your event?
Regardless of the event, it’s your duty as the organiser to ensure people are safe. However, different events clearly require different things. Smaller events may require less planning and security when compared to large events, for instance.
Regardless of the event though, security should be one of your concerns. If you’re planning a festival or concert, for example, there is the danger of crowd surges, aggressive behaviour, and crushing against fixed structures. Weddings can also be events which turn a bit violent, as can private parties. For this reason, it’s good to have at least some security presence.
The same can go for corporate events too. Depending on the calibre of attendees, have a security presence can give the conference goers peace of mind, or protect high-profile visitors. In this case, hiring security is definitely a good idea.
How many security guards do I need for an event?
The number of security guards you need for an event will vary according to the event. A personal event of 10 people or fewer will probably only require one guard, if that. In these cases, exercise your judgement regarding your guests. You’re probably not likely to need a guard for your civilised dinner party, for example.
A small private function of 10-50 people may only require 2-4 guards, but a larger event like a concert of 250-1000 people would require 12-30 guards.
The number of attendees isn’t the only consideration. You should also consider the type of event and whether or not there will be alcohol served. Typically, if alcohol is available this means an increased risk of aggressive behaviour, so you’ll require more guards than you would if there was no alcohol available.
How much does event security cost?
The cost of security hire for events can vary quite extensively based on the type of security you’re looking for. In some cases, you can hire security guards for £9.50 per hour, but in other cases, £20 per hour might be the going rate.
What you’re essentially buying, in this case, is increased expertise. Some security guards will have better training and more experience, meaning they’ll be better at their job. Again, you need to assess the degree of risk surrounding the event you’re planning, and hire security guards accordingly.
